The rapid development of lighting technology is making traditional control systems give way to smart solutions based on IoT communications.
Increasingly, lighting not only performs a utility function, but also provides valuable data, such as information on energy consumption levels, reporting on malfunctions and operating conditions, detecting motion, analysing ambient conditions and adjusting light intensity to meet current needs. However, all of these functions require a communication standard and physical interface that allows for easy integration and data exchange. Zhaga-D4i is such a solution.
What is Zhaga-D4i?
Zhaga-D4i is a combination of two key standards that define modern lighting control systems:
Zhaga
This is an international organization that develops specifications for LED luminaire components. It defines mechanical, electrical and optical interfaces for lighting components, including, among other things, sockets for mounting sensors and communication modules. Zhaga's standardisation makes it easy to upgrade and integrate luminaires with intelligent management systems. This allows manufacturers to offer compatible solutions, eliminating the problems associated with closed, dedicated control systems.
D4i
This is an extension of the DALI-2 system that enables power and communication between LED drivers, sensors and IoT modules. DALI-2 also introduces two-way communication, which means LED drivers can not only receive commands, but also send feedback data, such as energy consumption, malfunctions or operating temperature. In addition, it improves interoperability and allows support for motion sensors, lights and communication modules.

Connector as a key component of the technology
A key component of the Zhaga-D4i system is the Zhaga Book 18-compliant circular 4-pin connector, which allows for easy installation and upgrades - sensors and control modules can be replaced without interfering with the luminaire. It also facilitates quick integration with control systems, as IoT modules and controllers can be plug-and-play, with no additional wiring required. In addition, it provides two-way communication, meaning that luminaires can not only receive commands, but also send feedback data to lighting management systems. This allows the Zhaga-D4i connector to dynamically adapt luminaires to changing conditions and user needs.
Benefits of using Zhaga-D4i
Integrated control and monitoring
The luminaires can automatically adjust light intensity according to ambient conditions, saving energy and improving occupant comfort. Remote lighting management and real-time fault diagnostics are also possible, facilitating maintenance and reducing operating costs.
Simple and efficient upgrades
Control modules, sensors and components can be easily replaced without costly interference with luminaire design or changes to the electrical system. Such a modular system not only speeds up the implementation of new technologies, but also allows the lighting infrastructure to be gradually upgraded without the need for a one-time, costly replacement of the entire system
Integration with IoT systems
Zhaga-D4i allows for full compatibility with smart city and building management systems. The luminaires can analyse data on traffic, air quality and weather conditions, paving the way for advanced automation and energy optimization.
